“Her condition is stable,” Dr. Goldstein relayed to Mario in Morgan’s room the next afternoon. “Are you a relative? The police haven’t been able to locate any.”

“Uh…no, just a friend,” Mario replied.

Morgan listened closely. Who the hell does this guy think he is? He looks vaguely familiar, but he’s no friend of mine! And who’s the guy playing the doctor? They must have soap operas in hell!

“She’s very lucky she didn’t die.”

Morgan fixated on his words. I’m not dead! What do you mean I didn’t die? Shit! I can’t even do that right! There’s gotta be some mistake. Where did you get your medical degree, doctor? I took enough pills to kill a horse! I know I’ve gained a few pounds over the last couple of years, but not enough to withstand an entire bottle of muscle relaxers and two bottles of wine.

Dr. Goldstein continued, “If you hadn’t called 911 when you did, she probably would’ve bled to death from the head wound. In any case, it would’ve been too late to pump her stomach.”

But I wanted to die! Are you trying to tell me this guy saved my life! Go figure! Thirty- five years I wait for Prince Charming to come along and then this hunk arrives the day I decide to kill myself!

“How long do you think she’ll be in a coma?” Mario asked.

Coma! Coma! I can’t be in a coma! I can hear everything you’re saying. Hey, doc, over here! Listen to me! Watch my lips!

“It’s impossible to say. A day, a month, several years. We’ve seen these cases go either way.”

“Hey, how’s our girl doing?” Elna’s smile lit up the room. Mario detected a subtle look between Elna and Dr. Goldstein. He figured the doctor, who was at least twenty years older than Elna, was flirting with her. He wasn’t the macho type Mario imagined Elna would be attracted to—tall and lanky with salt and pepper hair. And apparently married; Mario noticed his wedding ring.

“She’s pretty stable right now,” Dr Goldstein answered. “I’d better finish my rounds.

Nice to meet you, Mario. Call me with any questions.” “Sure, doctor. Thanks.”

So this is the mess I’ve gotten myself into! It’s like I’m in one of those dreams where I’m trying to scream for help, but the words won’t come out. These people really, really can’t hear me. No one can. But how can I see and hear them? Okay, I stand corrected. This is not a dream. It’s a fucking nightmare!
